The name was recorded by a French explorer Jacques Marquette in 1673. It comes from the Wisconsin River, which was called by the Algonquian-speakers tribes, ”Meskousing”.
Some linguists think that the original name is borrowed from the Miami word ”meskonsing” which can be translated to ”it lies red” or ”this stream meanders through something red”.
